In 2023, Dench made headlines after she added her voice and gave her support to campaigners calling for a ban on blue badge parking in York city center to be lifted.

It would be recalled that, in November 2021, a permanent ban was introduced on disabled parking in pedestrianized areas.

Adding her voice to the issue, the actress said: “York city center is a rare jewel that should be free for all to enjoy, including those with a disability and for whom accessible parking is essential.

“I should like to offer my wholehearted support to people in the City of York who are asking the local council to reconsider any ban on the blue badge scheme in the city centre.”
